3 The interviewer can be a psychologist, mental health counselor, social worker, or health care professional. Motivational interviewing encourages clients to verbalize the changes they believe to be necessary and to explain their reasons for wanting change. The main goal is to elicit self-motivation by helping people see how tapping into motivation and generating lasting change are possible and accessible. 2 Motivational interviewing is helpful for individuals who have addictions or physical health issues and those who lack motivation, display hostility, or are unready to commit to change. 1 This form of counseling can act as a precursor to other psychological interventions, work in adjunct to psychotherapy, or be a stand-alone technique to change a particular behavior.Ĭhanging negative behaviors allows people to develop healthier choices, which, in turn, affects long-term physical and mental health outcomes. Motivational interviewing does just that it is a counseling style that challenges people to develop the internal motivations necessary to counteract or change certain behaviors they consider problematic in their lives. Notably, this quality is instilled or enhanced within individuals if they are ready to accept change. More accurately, it is a socially influenced quality related to a person’s desire to pursue a goal or act in a particular way. Jillian, along with a colleague at the University of New Mexico, started a virtual monthly meeting with others interested in this topic in late 2015.Motivation is often incorrectly perceived as an innate capability or characteristic. In October 2015, Jillian made contact with several others, including Pernille, Fredrik, and Greg after speaking with Bill Miller about interest in MI and leadership and organizations. A few other MINT members had conducted several forum workshops on this topic. One of our co-founders, Pernille, published a book, in Danish with a colleague, on MI and Leadership in 2013. Pernille also conducted a MINT forum on MI and leadership in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 2014.

In this book, Bill Miller talked about the connection of MI and leaders and organizations. In 2012, the founders of motivational interviewing, Bill Miller and Steve Rollnick, wrote the third edition of their foundational book, Motivational interviewing: Helping people change. One of our co-founders, Greg, started a doctoral program in leadership studies in 2011, with a plan for dissertation work on MI and leadership. MILO has been in the works in some ways for over ten years.
